There are three types of darshan one can get as mentioned in Shrimad Bhagwad Puran :

Darshan is the visitation of Divine Grace and Benevolence that is the Lord himself in some form. Usually it is experienced as a form of a deity one is accustomed to worshiping and the longing from the core called the SELF.
- Meditative darshan ; During meditation when one is with the world yet aloof, one is conscious but not awake, that is the primary form of darshan. By being awake implies to a realized state of being, the state of inner consciousness.
- Swapan darshan ; When in sleep if someone has a longing the darshan can be attained. This is the secondary form of darshan. Though outwardly it is mentioned as secondary form yet it is accessible only to those who are spiritually inclined.
- Aparoksh Sakshatkar; When despite being in full consciousness one can get darshan of God’s overbearing huge form. Such a darshan is unbearable and too powerful for most who have experienced it and they feel it is beyond any description. It surpasses all the words of vocabulary. This is the most superior and the rarest form of darshan experienced by the chosen few purest of pure souls on Earth Planet.
