As the story of Ishwar continues, Jai the elderly gentleman reminisces his younger days and revisits Ishwar’s office at D-10 Defense Colony in Delhi through his memory lane.
The Modesto Logo
This incident is related to the logo message written on the Modesto Mail Order catalog. I remember it as something that meant “If you want anything, anytime, anywhere in the world, Modesto can deliver it” .
During one of my visits to Ishwar Uncle’s office as I opened the door to his office room I noticed there was a diplomat sitting in the office. I was hesitant and wanted to close the door quietly, without disturbing them both. Uncle noticed my hesitation and immediately with the beautiful smile that he always had, he told me, “Jai, come in”. I went and sat on the chair next to that diplomat customer of his.
The diplomat at that juncture was asking Uncle about the logo sentence and Uncle replied saying, “we do try to fulfill it”. Then the diplomat said, ‘ you know I have this imported car and it has developed a problem. The mechanic has asked for a spare part and it is not available in Delhi or anywhere that I have checked. Please see if you can get it for me” and he handed out a slip written by the mechanic to Uncle.
Uncle called someone to his office – I don’t remember his name but he was a young boy like me that used to be with Uncle’s nephew Chander. Chander and that boy usually worked as a team and I often saw them together. Uncle gave him the slip and told him to Fax it to the concerned office probably in Hong Kong and to procure it by the fastest mail.
We all had a cup of tea and I left the office.
I happened to drop by at Uncle’s office after a day or two and saw the same customer in his office room. The spare part had arrived and the man was all praise for Uncle’s efficiency.
